Christer Sjöström is an R&D engineer and senior Professor of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. He has a long background in working with R&D and standardisation within areas such as performance over time of materials, products and technical systems and has contributed to most of the DBMC-events since the start of the series of conferences. One of his major interests is the important interrelation of academic research and industrial and societal development. He was President of CIB during 1995 – 1998, a period that was concluded with a Congress focussing “Construction and the Environment”. With his backstory of research work in industry, at research institutes and academy he has also over the years advised start-up companies and founded new companies. He is today counsellor and Board Member of a start-up with a patented accelerator technology to support production of green hydrogen gas.

Concordia University, together with the National Research Council Canada, is honored to host the 17ᵗʰ International Conference on the Durability of Building Materials and Components (XVII DBMC) in Montreal, Canada, July 20-24, 2026. This prestigious triennial event, first held in Ottawa in 1978, returns to Canada for the first time in nearly 25 years—since the 8ᵗʰ DBMC in Vancouver in 1999. The 2026 conference will spotlight the evolving challenges and opportunities in the field, with a particular focus on the impacts of climate change and emerging construction technologies on the durability and performance of building materials, components, and systems. Key themes include:
Participants can expect a rich program featuring plenary sessions, oral and poster presentations, interactive workshops, and collaborative meetings. Several international technical committees, such as CIB and ISO, have also chosen Montreal as the venue for their annual gatherings in conjunction with the conference. The XVII DBMC Organizing Committee are committed to delivering a world-class event that fosters networking, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer. We also encourage you to take time to enjoy the vibrant culture and unique charm of Montreal, Quebec.
We look forward to welcoming you to this exceptional event.
Sincerely,
